Dr David Cowan is an international law academic and author. He is Assistant Professor in the School of Law and Criminology at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, and Associate Lecturer in the Faculté de Droit - Catholic University of Lyon. He teaches and writes on law and technology, cyberlaw, legal ethics, and legal communication. Dr Cowan is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA). He is author of Effective Communication for Lawyers: A Practical Guide, which was shortlisted for Law Book of the Year at the Irish Law Awards 2022.
Dr Cowan is a pioneer in legal education, technology, and communication. He launched Law and Technology courses on the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme at Maynooth, the first programme of its kind in legal education globally. Dr Cowan has also written Strategic Internal Communication: How to Build Employee Engagement and Performance and Effective Communication for Lawyers: A Practical Guide.
As a Writer and Editor Dr Cowan worked for legal, technology and financial media, including the Financial Times, Euromoney, Reed International and numerous technology trade journals. He has also worked on research and writing projects for the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Dr Cowan is a graduate of the University of Oxford and the University of St Andrews, where he earned his PhD in International Relations. He is a former Visiting Scholar at Boston College, USA. His other books include Frank H Knight: Prophet of Freedom and The Coming Economic Implosion of Saudi Arabia. He is a member of the Society of Legal Scholars, Irish Association of Law Teachers, Society for Computers and Law, the International Bar Association, and the Bar of Ireland’s Media, Internet, and Data Protection Bar Association.
